How to use

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed, usually once a day after breakfast. Swallow the tablet whole with water.

How it works

It blocks calcium channels in the muscle of blood vessel walls, which relaxes and widens the vessels and lowers blood pressure. It also acts on some nerve endings that control blood vessel tone.

Safety advice

Alcohol Caution

Alcohol can add to the blood-pressure-lowering effect and make you dizzy. Limit alcohol.

Pregnancy Unsafe

Its labelling advises against use in pregnancy or if you could be pregnant. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.

Breastfeeding Consult your doctor

It is usually not recommended while breastfeeding. Ask your doctor.

Driving Caution

It can cause dizziness. Do not drive if you feel affected.

Kidney Caution

Use with caution in kidney disease. Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems.

Liver Caution

Use with caution in liver disease, as the medicine is processed by the liver.

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose, take it when you remember the same day. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not take two doses together.

Quick tips

  • Take it after breakfast at about the same time each day.
  • Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice, which can raise its levels.
  • Do not stop it suddenly without talking to your doctor.
  • Check your blood pressure regularly as your doctor advises.

Questions

Frequently asked

How is it different from amlodipine?

Both are calcium channel blockers. Cilnidipine also acts on certain nerve endings. Your doctor will choose the one that suits you.

How long do I need to take it?

High blood pressure is usually long term, so treatment often continues for a long time. Your doctor will review it.

Can I stop it if my blood pressure is normal?

No. A normal reading usually means the medicine is working. Talk to your doctor first.
