About Budecort 0.5 Respules

Budecort 0.5 Respules contains Budesonide 0.5 mg/2 ml. Budesonide is a corticosteroid (steroid) medicine that is breathed into the lungs. It is used regularly to prevent asthma symptoms by calming swelling and irritation in the airways. It is available as an inhaler and as a solution for nebuliser use. It does not relieve a sudden asthma attack.

Uses of Budecort 0.5 Respules

  • Long-term control and prevention of asthma (preventer)
  • Asthma in young children, using a nebuliser
  • Other airway conditions, such as croup, when a doctor advises

Benefits

In asthma

Used every day, it reduces swelling in the airways so you have fewer symptoms, fewer night-time wakings and fewer asthma attacks. It can take a few days to a few weeks to work fully.

Side effects

Rinsing your mouth with water and spitting it out after each use helps prevent hoarseness and thrush. Side effects affecting the whole body are uncommon at usual doses.

Common

  • Hoarse voice
  • Sore throat or mouth
  • Oral thrush (white patches in the mouth)
  • Cough after inhaling

Get medical help if you notice

  • Sudden wheezing or breathlessness straight after using it — use your reliever inhaler and seek medical help
  • Blurred vision or other changes in eyesight — contact your doctor
  • Allergic reaction: rash, swelling of the face or lips, difficulty breathing — seek emergency care

How to use

Use it every day exactly as your doctor prescribed, even when you feel well. For the inhaler: shake it, breathe out fully, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, press once as you breathe in slowly and deeply, then hold your breath for about 10 seconds. A spacer may help. For the nebuliser solution: put the measured dose into the nebuliser cup and breathe it in through the mouthpiece or mask as shown. Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after each use.

How it works

It is a steroid that acts on the airway lining to reduce swelling, mucus and sensitivity. This makes the airways less likely to tighten when exposed to triggers.

Safety advice

Alcohol Safe

No interaction known.

Pregnancy Caution

Studies of inhaled budesonide in pregnancy have been reassuring, and poorly controlled asthma is a risk to mother and baby. Do not stop it on your own; tell your doctor if you are pregnant.

Breastfeeding Safe

Only a very small amount reaches breast milk and labelling states it can be used while breastfeeding.

Driving Safe

It is not expected to affect your ability to drive.

Kidney Consult your doctor

Limited information is available. Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease.

Liver Caution

Liver disease can increase the amount of budesonide in the body. Tell your doctor if you have liver disease.

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose, take it when you remember. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not take two doses together.

Quick tips

  • Use it every day, even when you have no symptoms.
  • It does not stop a sudden attack — always carry your reliever inhaler.
  • Rinse your mouth and spit after each use.
  • Ask your pharmacist to check your inhaler technique.
  • See your doctor if you need your reliever more often than usual.

Questions

Frequently asked

Will it help during an asthma attack?

No. It is a preventer. Use your reliever inhaler for sudden symptoms and seek help if it is not working.

Is it safe for children?

It is widely used in children. Your doctor will use the lowest dose that works and may check the child's growth.

Why rinse my mouth?

Rinsing removes medicine left in the mouth and throat, which lowers the chance of thrush and a hoarse voice.

Is this the same as body-building steroids?

No. It is a corticosteroid that calms inflammation, which is very different from anabolic steroids.
