About Augmentin 625 Duo Tablet

Augmentin 625 Duo Tablet contains Amoxicillin 500 mg + Clavulanic Acid 125 mg. This is an antibiotic made of two parts. Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that kills bacteria, and clavulanic acid protects amoxicillin from being broken down by some bacteria. It is used to treat bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, chest, urinary tract, skin, teeth and gums. It does not work for viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

Uses of Augmentin 625 Duo Tablet

  • Ear, nose, throat and sinus infections
  • Chest infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections, including animal bites
  • Dental infections

Benefits

In bacterial infections

It kills the bacteria causing the infection, which helps symptoms such as fever, pain and swelling get better. Taking the full course helps make sure the infection is cleared and lowers the chance of it coming back.

Side effects

Most side effects are mild and settle on their own. Talk to your doctor if any of them bother you or do not go away. Do not stop the medicine early without asking your doctor.

Common

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Thrush (yeast infection) of the mouth or vagina
  • Skin rash

Get medical help if you notice

  • Allergic reaction: rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing — stop and seek emergency care
  • Severe or watery diarrhoea, sometimes with blood or stomach cramps, even weeks after the course — contact your doctor
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or pale stools — possible liver problems; contact your doctor
  • Severe skin reactions with blistering or peeling — stop and seek emergency care

How to use

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed, at the start of a meal. Swallow the tablet whole with water. For the suspension, shake the bottle well and measure the dose with the cup or syringe provided. Finish the full course even if you feel better.

How it works

Amoxicillin stops bacteria from building their cell walls, so they die. Clavulanic acid blocks beta-lactamase, an enzyme some bacteria use to destroy amoxicillin, so the antibiotic keeps working.

Safety advice

Alcohol Caution

No direct interaction is known, but alcohol may worsen stomach upset and slow your recovery. It is best avoided during infection.

Pregnancy Consult your doctor

Use only if your doctor advises it. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.

Breastfeeding Caution

Small amounts pass into breast milk and may cause diarrhoea or thrush in the baby. Ask your doctor before using it.

Driving Caution

It can occasionally cause dizziness. Do not drive if you feel affected.

Kidney Caution

Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease; the dose may need to be changed.

Liver Caution

It can rarely cause liver problems. Tell your doctor if you have liver disease or have had jaundice with this medicine before.

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not take two doses together.

Quick tips

  • Complete the full course, even if you feel better, so the infection does not come back.
  • Take it at the start of a meal to reduce stomach upset.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergy to penicillin or any other antibiotic.
  • Antibiotics do not work against colds and flu, which are caused by viruses.

Questions

Frequently asked

I am allergic to penicillin. Can I take this?

No. This medicine contains a penicillin. Tell your doctor about your allergy so another antibiotic can be chosen.

Why must I finish the course?

Stopping early can leave some bacteria alive, so the infection may return or bacteria may become resistant to the antibiotic.

What should I do about diarrhoea?

Mild loose stools are common. Drink plenty of fluids. If diarrhoea is severe, watery or bloody, contact your doctor.

Will it work for a cold?

No. Colds and flu are caused by viruses, and antibiotics do not work against viruses.
